Also, teak is a very rare and special wood that is extremely durable and naturally resists moisture damage better than any other wood. It has historically been used to build ships as well as for construction in very moist climates where it grows. It takes 80 years for a teak wood tree to reach a size where it can be harvested and so there have been legal limitations placed upon the farming and harvesting of teak wood for profit. Only a certain number of trees are allowed to be cut down per year and so many must be planted as replacements. This makes this wood very rare and precious. Most smaller teak items that can be found on the market are reclaimed pieces from ships and buildings that have been reworked into other useful objects. Your teak wood afro pick may have been fashioned from a piece of wood that is well over 100 years old.
